SHU Women's Cross Country Picked 2nd in NEC Poll; Men Tabbed 5th
FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart women's cross country team was picked second in the annual Northeast Conference Coaches' Poll released this week. The Pioneer men were picked fifth in the men's coaches' poll.
The Pioneer women finished as the runner-up at the Northeast Conference Championship last fall, a spot they have landed in six time in program history (2001, 2003, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2011).
Senior Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) is the Pioneer's top-returning runner this fall. Selmquist was an All-NEC runner last fall, finishing 14th at the league's championship race. Fellow seniors Michelle Navarro (Piscataway, NJ) and Brittany Llobell (West Sayville, NY) are back as well after running in the top-25 at last year's NEC meet.
For the men, senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) leads the Pioneers into the season. Connelly finished in seventh place in 26:50.30 at last year's NEC race, nabbing a spot on the All-Conference squad. He was named NEC Athlete of the Week one time last season for his fifth place overall finish at the Albany Invitational 8K.
Connelly had the best ever finish by a SHU runner in the NCAA Regional Championship when he placed 77th with a time of 33:08.1 on the 10,000 meter course in Buffalo. He capped his fall season with a spot on th4 IC4A All-East team when he finished third at the race at Van Cortlandt Park in 25:45.
Both teams will open the season at the Stony Brook University Invitational on Saturday, September 1st.
