(Fairfield, CT) – For eighth season in a row, the Sacred Heart Women's Cross Country team won the 35th Annual Father Victor F. Leeber, S. J. Invitational at Fairfield University Saturday afternoon behind a first-place finish by Brittney Lane and second place finish by Brittany Heninger.
Lane ran the course in 18:41.6, followed by Heninger and her 18:45.71. The race markes Lane's first individual collegiate win. She is the only NEC athlete to beat her teammate Heninger this year.
"This was a breakout performance by Brittany Lane," said head coahc Christian Morrison. "She and Brittany Heninger worked to stay together up front during the race, and it really paid off."
The Pioneers placed six runners in the top 10 of the event, including Megan Papp (5th-19:29.31), Brittany Llobell (7th-19:35.27), Teresa Gagliostro (8th-19:41.01), and Alyssa Selmquist (10th-19:46.93). Emma Bolduc rounds out the top 7 SHU point-getters with a 12th place finish in 19:59.60. Papp also finished in the top five of last year's Fairfield Invitational, while Selmquist finished in the top ten for the third straight year, as Llobell did for the second straight year. The much improved Gagliostro ran a personal best for the third straight race, and has lowered her personal best by a total of 1:02 this season.
"I was pleasantly surprised with how well the women ran on a warm, muggy day, and on a relatively slow course," said Morrison. "They really asserted themselves nicely, and I look forward to seeing how they stack up against the competition they'll see in the upcoming New England Championships."
The Men's Cross Country team finished eighth, with Christopher Connelly finishing 18th in 27:46. Aleksandr Morin (32nd-28:23), Patrick Peterson (46th-29:26), Jeffrey Benesch (52nd-29:52), Stephen Phillips (53rd-29:55), Taylor Dressman (57th-30:20), and Kevin Schumann (59th-30:39).
