Fairfield, Conn. (Oct. 27, 2012)—The Pioneers outkilled the Bulldogs 43-22 as they swept Bryant 3-0 Saturday night. Karly Shockey (Chino Hill, Calif.) led the match with 12 kills. The win brings the Sacred Heart Women's Volleyball team to an even 6-6 against conference opponents and 8-18 on the season.
The Pioneers took the first four points of the match jumping out to a lead they would maintain halfway through the first set. Bryant chipped away until they evened the game at 15, but SHU never allowed them the lead as a kill from Johanna Ovsenek (London, On.) put Sacred Heart back on top. With the Pioneers on set-point, a SHU hitting error gave the Bulldogs hope as it pulled them within one, but they answered with an error of their own giving Sacred Heart to first set 25-23.
The second set was neck-and-neck with the score tying six times. Once again the Pioneers burst out of the 15-15 tie. They cruised to a big 2-0 match lead on a 10-4 run highlighted by Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, PR) and Sara Fernandez's (Guaynabo, PR) four-point service runs. Elise Sage's (Greenwood Village, Colo.) hammered down a kill to send the Pioneers into the break with a 25-18 victory.
Shockey recorded six kills in Sacred Heart's 25-22 third set win. The Pioneers maintained the lead through most of the set, only allowing the Bulldogs to earn a one-point lead 18-17. With SHU on match-point, Bryant rallied together for three points before Mercado's kill clinched the set.
Sacred Heart travels to Teaneck, N.J. tomorrow to do battle with the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights who beat the Pioneers 3-1 earlier this season.
