The Pioneers' Long Beach duo of Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) and Alisa Mesa (Long Beach, CA) each secured a Molten/Northeast Conference weekly award following SHU's two wins at the Big Orange Tournament. Colberg, a senior, and Mesa, a freshman, also both hail from the same California high school, Long Beach Polytechnic.
Colberg was named the Molten/NEC Player of the Week after posting 45 digs in the Pioneers first three matches of 2011, averaging 5.00 per set. After the first weekend of play the SHU libero tops the Northeast Conference in both categories. This is the second time in her career Colberg has been named the Molten/Northeast Conference player of the week.
Mesa had a memorable first week in a Sacred Heart uniform, posting 5.78 assists and 3.11 digs per set at the Big Orange Tournament en route to picking up Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week accolades. The SHU setter notched her first career double-double against Siena with 20 assists and 11 digs. Mesa also dropped in three service aces and one block over the weekend.
Colberg, Mesa, and the rest of the Pioneers will be back in action at the SHU Invitational. Sacred Heart will have its 2011 home opener Friday night at 7:00 pm against Brown.
