Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) and Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) each picked up a Molten/Northeast Conference weekly award after helping the Pioneers to a perfect 3-0 record at the Holly Young Invitational. Sage was named the Molten/NEC player of the week, compiling a .471 hitting percentage in the three matches. Mercado averaged a double-double over the tournament as the freshman garnered her second rookie of the week award for the season.
Sage posted a stellar weekend offensively as Sacred Heart swept the Holly Young Invitational in Durham, NH. The sophomore's dominance at the net came in the form of 39 kills, a .471 hitting clip and 3 blocks over the course of the three-match competition. In the Pioneers first victory of the tournament, a 3-1 win over Rutgers, Sage slammed home 16 kills and posted a .625 hitting percentage. The .625 mark is currently the highest single match hitting clip by a NEC player this season. She continued the offensive assault through the weekend, registering seven kills against New Hampshire and another 16 against Dartmouth. Sage notch attack percentages of .445 and .364, respectively en route to being selected to the all-tournament team.
Mercado's performance on the court continue to lead league freshmen, the outside hitter contributed to the Pioneer's three-win weekend by adding 37 kills, a .250 attack percentage, 33 digs and two blocks. She notched a double-double in kills (15) and digs (17) in Sacred Heart's 3-1 triumph over Dartmouth. Mercado's all-around skills proved affective against every tournament team, as the rookie recorded 12 kills and 9 digs against Rutgers and 10 kills and 7 digs against New Hampshire.
The Pioneers play a road match against Hartford this Thursday in a final tune-up before Northeast Conference action begins at home Saturday afternoon in a clash with Fairleigh Dickinson
