Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) has been named the Molten/Northeast Conference player of the week after earning tournament co-MVP honors at the 2010 Sacred Heart Invitational last weekend. The sophomore helped propel the SHU women's volleyball team to a perfect 3-0 record at the tournament as they were named co-champions of the event. Sage was dominant throughout the tournament posting a .351 hitting percentage over the three matches. She finished the weekend with 27 kills, 14 digs, six service aces, and three blocks. This is Sage's first time being named the NEC player of the week after taking home the rookie of the week award twice in 2009.
Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) claimed Molten/Northeast Conference rookie of the week honors after her first three career collegiate matches at the SHU Invitational. Mercado's performances earned her a spot on the all-tournament team. The freshman led the tournament averaging 3.60 kills per set. She posted a double-double in her first career match against Lehigh with 13 kills and 11 digs. The outside hitter improved on those numbers in the final match of the tournament with 15 kills and 13 digs while hitting .324 in a 3-0 SHU victory over Binghamton.
The women's volleyball team returns to action this weekend in Baltimore, MD at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament hosted by UMBC and Towson. The Pioneers take on the two host schools as well as Ohio St. and Howard during the two day event, which will take place September 10-11.
