Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) led the SHU attack with seven kills but the Pioneers fell to host Long Beach State 3-0 at the Baden Classic this afternoon. Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) posted her second straight match with double figures in digs, notching 10 against the 49ers. Long Beach State used its .352 hitting mark to earn the sweep of the Pioneers (25-10, 25-15, 25-12).
Long Beach State (3-0) jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead to start the opening game. The 49ers extended the lead to 14-4 and forced the Pioneers to try and chase the rest of the way. Janisa Johnson and Caitlin Ledoux each put up four kills while SHU struggled, compiling nine attack errors. It was Ledoux who put away the last point of the game to give the host a 1-0 advantage.
Sacred Heart (0-2) improved in the second game hitting a solid .323 with 14 kills and only four errors. After trading points early the Pioneers fell behind 9-5 after back-to-back kills from Ashley Vazquez and Johnson. SHU charged back and closed the gap to 11-9 with kills from Trimble and Johanna Ovsenek (London, Ontario). That would be as close as Sacred Heart could get as the 49ers posted a huge .536 hitting mark, making just one error, en route to the second set victory.
The Beach would jump out to another early lead in the third set at 9-4, despite SHU head coach Rob Machan trying to break up the rhythm with an early timeout. Libby Fontanilla chipped in three aces as the host team remains undefeated in 2010. Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) tallied 21 assists in the match for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart returns to action later tonight against Rutgers in their final match at the Baden State Classic. The action is set to being at 7:30 EST with live stats available HERE.
