FAIRFIELD, CT - Sacred Heart junior Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) was named the Northeast Conference Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week announced on Wednesday. Aponte earns her first NEC Field Athlete of the Week award this outdoor season thanks to her performace at the Rider Invitational.
Aponte remained undefeated in her signature event this season. The Sacred Heart shot putter struck gold for the second week in a row, topping a field of 13 throwers at the Rider University Invitational. She put the shot 14.10m (46' 3.25") at Rider, a performance that would catapult her atop the NEC leader board had she not been there already. Aponte, who finished in first at the NEC Indoor Championships this past February, owns a seasonal best of 14.75m (48' 4.75"). That mark places her 38th overall in the NCAA East Region. With the top 48 in each event getting a bid, Aponte appears poised to earn her first-ever trip to the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Round this season. In 2012, the cut-off for the East Regional in the women's shot put was 14.71m.
