ORLANDO, FL (March 4, 2012) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened their annual spring trip with a 6-1 win over Northeast Conference member Robert Morris at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando. The Pioneers improved to 3-4 with win and are now 2-0 against NEC competition this season.
SHU swept all three doubles matches to take the point. Senior Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) led the way with an 8-7 (1) win over Carla Limon and Carolina Mourao Teixeira at #1. Sophomore Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and senior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) won at #2 over Clarissa Chen and Isabella Novella, 8-3. Senior Kristina Legenza (Berlin, CT) and freshman Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) compelted the sweep with a 9-7 win over Ekaterina Rudneva.
The Pioners won five of the six singles matches, taking spots two through six. Rydzewski won 6-3, 6-2 over Limon at #2 followed by a 6-0, 6-3 win by Donnelly over Chen at #3. Chao won at #4 over Novella, 6-0 and 6-1.
Downing and Legenza finished out the win at #5 and #6. Downing winning 6-0 and 6-2 over Rudneva and Legenza winning 6-2 and 6-1 over Kourtney Passero.
The Pioneers are back in action on Monday taking on South Dakota State at 12 noon.
