WEST WINDSOR, NJ (April 15, 2011) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team posted a 4-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast Conference Champsionship Friday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. The #4 seeded Pioneers bounced back from four-straight losses heading into the tournament to sweep the #5 seeded Mount and move into the semifinal round on Saturday.
The Pioneers won at #2 and #3 doubles to open the match by taking the doubles point. Senior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly RI) and junionr Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) posted a hard fought 8-6 win over Samantha Pinchoff and Kelly Conroy at #2. The team of senior Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and junior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) posted an 8-3 win at #3 over Emma Haley and Carly Landini for the point.
Harrington, Downing and freshman Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) earned the three singles wins needed for the Pioneers to advance on to Saturday's match. Harrington defeated Pinchoff 6-4, 6-4 at #2 singles. Kaldan won at #3, beating Conroy 6-3 and 6-4. Downing took down Renee Deane at #6 singles, 7-5, 6-2.
Sacred Heart will face the #1 seed Quinnipiac at 2:00 pm Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers will have the chance to avenge a 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Bobcats on April 7th. In the other semifinal, #2 seed Fairleigh Dickinson takes on the #3 seed Long Island Blackbirds for the right to challange for the championship.
