The Sacred Heart women's tennis team posted a 11-4 record over the final two days of the 2010 Army Eastern Championships including a pair of consolation bracket victories. Freshman Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and junior Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) both won their consolation brackets while the team of senior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) and junior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) advanced to the finals in their consolation doubles draw.
In the "B" singles draw, Kaldan fell in her opener to Pitt's Gabrielle Catanzarti, 7-5, 6-4. She rebounded to post three wins to win the "B" Singles Consolation bracket. Kaldan beat Maria Clara-Bernandez, 8-3. She advanced to the final of the bracket with an 8-5 win over Rhode Island's Christen Cadigan. She finished off her tournament with an 8-1 win over Bryant's Lucy Bird.
Donnelly rebouded from an opening round 6-2, 6-4 loss to Bucknell's Daria Tuzhikova in the "C" singles bracket by winning the Honor Bracket, posting four wins in the draw. She opened with a 9-7 win over UConn's Lauren Wilmarth. She beat Boudin's Sasanna Howard, 8-3, and advanced to the final with an 8-1 win over NJIT's Hannelore MacDonald. Donnelly won the Honor draw with an 8-2 win over Chole Pike from Stony Brook.
In "A" singles, senior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) lost her opening match to Aleksandra Paulovic of Long Island, 6-3, 6-2. She won her consolation match over Jen Learmonth of UConn, 8-2 before falling to Pui Wing-Sher of Seton Hall, 8-1.
In the "A" doubles draw Demers and Downing earned an opening round win over Katie Francazio and Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood from Bryant, 8-3. The duo fell in the round of 16 to Stony Brook's Fanny Charlinquart and Gayatri Krishnan, 8-2.
The team of Demers and Downing would go on the Lichtenberg Doubles bracket finals with three wins. The won their round of 16 matche with Long Island's Fatima Ouattara and Linn Sjorgen and moved on to the semi's with a win over Army's Audrey Hansen and Holly Pappafotis. They earned a spot in the finals with an 8-5 win over Kimmy Borza and Karma Parbhu, 8-5. The came up short in the final match falling to Chantalle Laverto and Emma Lewis, 8-6.
The Pioneers are in dual match action this week taking on the Monmouth Hawks in Northeast Conference action.
