SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Sacred Heart University swimming team saw its first action of 2011 with a meet at Northeast Conference opponent Bryant University, Wednesday evening. The Pioneers fell to the Bulldogs 132-72 despite a pair of first place finishes from senior Katie Marshall (Cumberland, R.I.).
Marshall hit the wall in 2:00.66 in the 200-yard free style. It was her top time of the season in that event and earned her a first place finish. She also took first in the 500-free with a time of 5:22.34.
Junior Meghan Bailey (Walpole, Mass.) claimed first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 2:16.59. In the 200 IM, she set another personal best as she finished third with a time of 2:18.48.
Freshman Hayley McGill (Old Lyme, Conn.) swam the 100-free in 56.62 seconds to finish second.
In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Nicole Del Nero (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) took second, while sophomore Meg Bellamy (Barrington, R.I.) finished third. Del Nero swam the event in 2:19.19 and Bellamy finished in 2:22.36.
Junior Laurie Casado (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, N.Y.) finished two, three in the 200-yard breaststroke. Casado came in with a time of 2:32.59, while Walters hit the wall in 2:36.67.
Sacred Heart has its last dual meet competition of the season as the Pioneers take on Western Connecticut on January 29 in preparation for the NEC Championship at MIT in mid-February.
