SHU Swimmers Edged Out in Season Opener

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Sacred Heart University swimming team opened its 2010-11 season at Wagner College on Saturday afternoon in a tri-meet that also featured St. Francis (NY).

The meet was a close one between the three Northeast Conference opponents.  The Hawks entered the meet as the pre-season number three selection by the conference's coaches, while the Pioneers were predicted to finish fifth and the Terriers fifth.

Junior Laurie Casado (Queens, N.Y.) took home a victory in the 100-yard breststroke by hitting the wall at 1:09.79.

Senior Katie Marshall, last year's NEC 200-fly champion, posted a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.95 and also finished second in the 500-free with a time of 5:18.77.

Freshman Amy Nunes (Seekonk, Mass.) swam to a pair of second place finishes in the 500 and 1,000 meter freestyles.  She completed the 500 in 5:28.08 and the 1,000 in 11:19.81.

In the 100-fly freshman Liz Bennett (Fairbanks, Alaska) and junior Meghan Bailey (Walpole, Mass.) finished two and three.  Bennett came in at 1:01.69, while Bailey finished in 1:04.01.

The Pioneers dive back into action next Saturday when they visit C.W. Post.
