Fairfield, Conn. (March 29, 2013)—The Sacred Heart Softball team snagged their first conference wins with the sweep of Wagner Friday afternoon. The Pioneers shut out Wagner in both games, winning the first 8-0 and squeezing out a 1-0 win in the second game. Justin Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) knocked in three runs in the first game while going 2-for-3 from the plate. Senior Melissa Tobin (Hudson, Mass.) collected the only RBI in the second game securing the win for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart is now 16-9 this season and 2-0 against Northeast Conference opponents.
Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) got the win in the first game, pitching six innings of shutout ball, and striking out four batters. The Pioneers scored in every innings except the second, posting a run in both the first and third and two in the final three innings.
Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) too pitched a shutout. The sophomore tossed seven innings allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out two. With one down in the bottom of the fifth, Nicki Surkes (Brightwaters, N.Y.) singled to leftfield, putting the winning run on first. Next batter, Tobin doubled to the centerfield wall sending Surkes home for the game's only run.
Sacred Heart is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Pioneer Park when they host Monmouth University. The doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m.
