(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by the CCSU Blue Devils Saturday afternoon, losing 2-0 and 10-1.
In game one, the Pioneers avoided being no-hit by Laura Messina when Liz Tsipouras (Simi Valley, CA) singled to right field a couple pitches after CCSU first baseman Nicole Springer was unable to squeeze a foul pop up. After an error, SHU put the tying runs on base but was unable to score.
The Blue Devils took the first lead of the game in the third on an RBI double by Tessa Brown to deep right-centerfield. CCSU pushed another across on a two-out RBI single to left by Sarah Vlahos in the fifth.
Messina went the distance, settling for a one-hitter. Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) pitched a complete game as well, giving up two earned runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
In game two, CCSU took an early lead on Springer's two-out RBI double to deep right. Rebecca Mussati, Springer, and Alyssa McCourt all added RBI singles as part of a three-run third for the Blue Devils. McCourt drove in another with an RBI single up the middle in the fifth.
Tsipouras delivered SHU's first run of the day with an RBI single to right with two outs in the sixth, however CCSU added four in the seventh on an error, a run-scoring fielder's choice, and an RBI single by Brown.
The Pioneers look to rebound in a doubleheader at LIU-Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
