Senior hurler Jen Rusell (Seymour, CT) closed out the final regular season weekend of her career with three wins en route to earning Akadema/Northeast Conference pitcher of the week accolades. The Pioneers finished the year with double header sweeps of Long Island and Bryant to secure the program's best NEC regular season record in history.
Russell started the weekend with a complete game three-hit shutout of LIU on senior day to pick up the 60th victory of her career. In her dominant performance Russell allowed just one Blackbird to reach third base, escaping a bases loaded, no-out, jam en route to her seventh shutout of the year.
Russell followed that performance by tossing 12.2 innings Sunday afternoon versus Bryant and earning a win in both ends of a double header that leads SHU into the post season on a five game winning streak. For the week opposing batters hit just .222 and struck out 13 times against the hard throwing right hander.
The Pioneers have clinched a spot in the 2011 NEC tournament and can still host the event as well as capture a share of the program's first regular season crown.
