Brooklyn, N.Y.—The third and fourth place teams in the Northeast Conference faced off today as the Sacred Heart Pioneers took on the Long Island Blackhawks in what ended up being a one-goal game. The Blackhawks defeated the Pioneers 1-0, improving their record to 9-7 (6-2 NEC). Sacred Heart's record drops to 8-5-3 (4-3-1 NEC).
Sacred Heart outshot Long Island 4-2 in the first half, but the Blackhawk defense was strong, making sure no Pioneer shots found the goal. Long Island goal keeper Jennifer Bannon made two saves in the half. While the Pioneer offense was strong, it was the Blackhawks to scored the first and only goal of the game.
In the 40th minute of the game, sophomore Caroline Kaplan got the ball from Jessica Roelant and snuck it past Sacred Heart goal keeper Sydney Judkins (South Park, P.A.) for her first goal as a Blackhawk.
The Pioneers outshot the Blackhawks 9-6 in the game. Ashley Moore (Levittown, N.Y.), Amanda Stiles (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Alyssa Brandofino (East Northport, N.Y.) led Sacred Heart's offense with two shots each. Judkins made two saves on the day.
The Pioneers come back home next weekend to face Monmouth University Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Mount St. Mary's at noon on Sunday.
