FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University women's soccer team looks ahead to three games this week after posting back-to-back wins over Labor Day Weekend. The Pioneers (2-1) visit intrastate rival Yale tonight at 7:00 pm and will spend their weekend in West Point, N.Y. when they face St. Bonaventure and Army in the Army Soccer Classic.
About the Pioneers... SHU followed up an opening night loss with a pair of victories over the weekend. On Friday night, the Pioneers took a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest, 4-3, at home against Maine. In action on Sunday, Sacred Heart pieced together a 2-1 win at Stony Brook. Senior Amanda Stiles (Miller Place, N.Y.) and junior Jen Mulvey (Manalapan, N.J.) have each scored two goals on the season. In goal, junior Sydney Judkins (South Park, Pa.) has started all three games in net and holds a 1.50 goals against average and .727 save percentage on eight saves.
Last Time Out... Judkins played the entire 90 minutes in net for the first time all season and earned her first win with a season-high five saves in a 2-1 win over Stony Brook. Sacred Heart took the first lead of the game when freshman midfielder Kristin Verrette (Saugus, Mass.) posted the first goal of her collegiate career. With less than nine minutes to play, the Seawolves tied the game 1-1. The game did not stay tied for long as senior defender Lauren Boccio (Dix Hills, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season in the 86th minute.
Scouting the Bulldogs... Yale began play in 2011 with a 2-0 win over Marist and a 0-0 tieagainst Providence, entering tonight's match-up at 1-0-1. Freshman forwards Meredith Speck and Georgianna Wagemann each scored in the season opening win vs. the Red Foxes. Senior Enma Mullo and junior Kristen Foster are the top returning scorers from a year ago after totaling 11 points each, both on four goals and three assists. Junior Adel Jackson-Gibson has started both games in goal and made nine saves, while not allowing a single goal.
Last Time They Met... All-time, Sacred Heart is 0-9 when facing Yale. This season marks the 10th time that the two teams have met in the last 11 years. Last season the Pioneers fell to the Bulldogs 4-0, despite eight saves from goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt. Four different players score for Yale including Foster and Miyuki Hino, who score the first and game-winning goal.
Army Soccer Classic... Sacred Heart, St. Bonaventure, and Virginia Military Institute will all spend the weekend in West Point, N.Y. for the Army Soccer Classic, hosted by the Army Black Knights who are coming off a Black Knight Invitational victory last weekend. The Pioneers take on the Bonnies Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm to get the classi underway. In a unique opportunity, SHU faces Army at 3:00 pm on Sunday September 11, a game that will also serve to commemorate the 10-year passing of the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. The Pioneers are even 1-1 in the all-time series, with Sacred Heart taking a 1-0 win in last year's season opener.
