Pioneers Open NEC Slate With 1-0 Victory Over Fairleigh Dickinson
Amanda Stiles (Miller Place, NY) netted the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Meghan Reichelt (Selden, NY) made four saves as the Pioneers downed the Knights in Teaneck, NJ Tuesday night. The shutout was Reichelt's third of the season while the game winner from Stiles was the junior's third tally of 2010.
Sacred Heart (5-3-2, 1-0-0 NEC) outshot the Knights 10-7 overall, including a 6-3 margin in the first half. Stiles found the back of the net in the 42nd with the goal that would prove to be the game winner. After claiming a 50-50 ball at midfield Stiles rushed in and beat the FDU goalkeeper one-on-one with a shot from 30 yards out. The Pioneers dominated the action in the first half earning eight corner kicks to three for the home team.
Fairleigh Dickinson (0-9-0, 0-1-0 NEC) applied some pressure in the final five minutes of the game but were unable to break through with an equalizer. Rashida Sherman led the attack for the Knights putting two shots on net. The victory was the first road win for the Pioneers in 2010 and is the second straight triumph over FDU after the Knights claimed a 1-0 win in double overtime in 2008.
The Pioneers continue NEC action this weekend against Bryant Sunday afternoon at Campus Field, where Sacred Heart holds a 4-1-1 record this season. Kick-off between SHU and the Bulldogs is set for 3:00 pm.
