Pioneer Rowers Have Strong Showing at Spring Mets
FAIRFIELD, CT (April 15, 2013) - The Sacred Heart rowing team completed a day of racing at the Spring Metropolitan Regatta at Orchard Beach Lagoon on Saturday afternoon finishing with several strong finishes.
The SHU varsity pair of senior Danielle Palmaccio (East Moriches, NY) and sophomore Jaclyn Smith (Williston Park, NY) took home the gold medal in the women's pair race. The duo turned in a time of 8:44.0 to beat boats from Iona, Hofstra and NYU.
In the varsity 4 race, the SHU boat of freshmen Catherine Lott (Roxbury, CT) and Jillian Gray (Andover, MA), Palmaccio, Smith and senior Chiara Zambelli (Lebanon, NJ) grabbed a second place finish with a time of 8:47.5. SHU won their heat with a time of 7:56.0 to advance to the final where they took second behind Iona.
Sacred Heart earned third place finishes in the varsity 8 and novice 4 races on saturday. In the varsity 8, senior Amanda Casey (Bronx, NY), Elizabeth Roy (York, ME), Jensen Richert (Iselin, NJ) Alanna Cofrancesco (Meriden, CT), and Annemarie A'Hearn (Mahopac, NY), freshmen Taylor Langon (Kingston, NY), Emma Trapani (Basking Ridge, NJ), Emily Casey (Arlington, MA) and sophomore Christina Pesci (Nutley, NJ) rowed their way to a third finish with a time of 8:44.7.A. In the novice 4, the boat consisting of Lott, Gray, Trapani, Langon and Casey crossed the finish line in 9:16.2.
As a team, the Pioneers finished the event fifth among 11 teams competing. SHU will compete at the 2013 MAAC Championships at Mercer County Park in New Jersey on April 27th and 28th.
