SHU Ends Fall Season with Strong Outing at Metropolitan Regatta
The Sacred Heart rowing team ended their fall season on Sunday, capturing medals in the novice 4+ and novice 8+ races at the Fall Metropolitan Regatta at Orchard Beach Lagoon, NY. The team will head into their winter training on a high note as they prepare for six spring races starting in late March.
"The improvement the team has made in the past six weeks is unbelievable," stated first year head coach Nicoleta Mantescu. "We are looking forward to an intense winter training and conditioning program to get us ready for a winning season in the spring."
Thirteen boats made up the field in the novice 4 + race were the Pioneers took home the sliver and bronze medals. SHU turned in strong finishes in front of top-flight programs from NYU, Iona and Fordham. The silver medal team was made up of sophomores Sarah Prizzia (Kingston, NY), Amanda Casey (Bronx, NY) and coxswain Kaitlin Rivest (Ludlow, MA) and freshmen Victoria Allers (Clifton Park, NY), Kaitlyn Blanda (Huntington, NY).
The Pioneer bronze medal novice 4+ team featured junior coxswain Danielle French (Northport, NY) and sophomores Alanna Cofrancesco (Meriden, CT), Kristen Brozek (Acton, MA), Chiara Zambelli (Lebanon, NJ) and Annemarie A'Hearn (Mahopac, NY).
In the novice 8+ race, Sacred Heart won the silver, finishing second behind Army but beating out teams from Fordham, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, NYU and Stony Brook among other. Coxswain Rivest along with Allers, Prizzia, Blanda, Brozek, Zambelli, A'Hearn and Cofrancesco were joined by sophomore Danielle Palmaccio (East Moriches, NY) in the boat.
The Pioneer varsity 4+ boats turned in a great race finishing third and fourth in their respective heats and ninth and 10th in the field of 18 crews. The third place team consisted of sophomore Lynn Ciccarelli (Holmdel, NJ), French, Palmaccio, Zambelli and Rivest (Coxswain). Finishing fourth was the team of senior Devon Clark (Hawthorne, NJ), junior Jen Pompillonio (Yorktown Heights, NY), sophomore Elizabeth Cho (Middletown, CT), Casey and Allers (Coxswain).
In the varsity 8+, SHU came back to finish second on their race and fourth overall defeating Fordham, Iona and many more. The team consisted of Allers, Pampillonio, Casey, Cho, Clark, Prizzia, Ciccarelli, French and Rivest (Coxswain).
SHU will return to action in 2011 with the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River on March 26th. The Pioneers will host the Sacred Heart Invitational on the Housatonic in Shelton on April 2nd.
