Pioneer Rowing Opens Season at Head of the Housatonic
The Sacred Heart rowing team under the direction of new head coach Nicoleta Mantescu will open their 2010-11 season on Saturday afternoon competiting at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta in Shelton, CT. The 2010 event starts at 9:30 am and the Pioneers will be racing at 11:10 am and 4:15 pm.
The 16th Head of the Housatonic will take place on Saturday, October 9, 2010 on the beautiful Housatonic River in Shelton, CT. Hosted by the New Haven Rowing Club, the Head of the Housatonic is one of the largest single-day head races in the country attracting rowers of all levels -- from novice to elite, junior to veteran master. The regatta venue, Indian Well State Park, is situated on a stretch of the river with dams on both ends that create 4.5 miles of calm water with gentle turns. Lined by tree-covered hills, the course is 2.7 miles starting just below the park and ending at the New Haven Rowing Club boathouse across the river in Oxford, CT. Wading into the river to launch from the 1000 foot beach adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the race venue.
SHU was forced to wait a week to get their first competition under their belts after seeing their scheduled season opener, the Riverfront Recapture in Hartford, cancelled due to the weather last weekend. Last season, the Pioneers posted a strong finish time of 18:48 at the event, beating long-time rival Fairfield University. The Sacred Heart boathouse lies downriver of the race course on the Housatonic, providing an excellent opportunity to race in familiar territory.
The remaining fall schedule will feature the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga, NY and the Fall Metropolitan Regatta at Orchard Beach Lagoon, NY.
