Three Pioneers Named All-NEC

FAIRFIELD, CT (April 25, 2013) - Sacred Heart juniors Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwaters, NY), Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) and Samantha Villafranca (Wading River, NY) were named to the All-Northeast Conference second team announced the league on the eve of the 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament. 

Vaccaro played her way on to the all-conference team a year after missing all but one game to injury last season.  Vaccaro burst back on the scene in 2013 finishing third in the NEC in scoring and goals per game.  She scored 57 points this spring coming on 36 goals and 21 assists.  Her 57 points this year rank 10th in the SHU Divison I record book for points in a season.  Vaccaro tied the SHU Division I record for points in a game when she posted five goals and five assists in a win over St. Mary's (Ca.).  She set a new career-high with six goals in the loss at Bryant.  In NEC only games, Vaccaro finished with 26 goals, tying for tops in the league.

Both Russo and Villafranca make return appearances to the All-NEC team in 2013 after earning nods last spring.  Russo finished third on the team in scoring with 30 goals and five assists on the year.  Russo posted 27 draw controls, 21 ground balls adn 17 caused turnovers as well in2013.

Villafranca anchored the Pioneer defense and led the Pioneers with 39 grounders this spring.  She also led the team with 24 caused turnovers and 35 draw wins.  She ranked fourth in the NEC in both ground balls per game (2.60) and caused turnovers per game (1.60).
