NEW BRITAIN, CT (March 29, 2013) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team saw a 4-2 first half lead erased by a seven-goal Central Connecticut run falling to the Blue Devils, 9-6, Thursday afternoon in Northeast Conference action. The Pioneers fall to 1-1 in the NEC while CCSU improves to 3-0 in league play.
CCSU (5-5, 3-0 NEC) got four goals off the bench from Falynn McCartney. The Blue Devils dominated on draws, winning 12 of 17, holding a 7-2 edge in the second half. Central also out shot SHU, 26-18 and forced 26 Pioneer turnovers.
The two teams traded goals to a 2-2 with 16:25 left in the first half, the first two Pioneer tallies coming off the stick of Russo, both 8-meter scores. Russo's second set off a three-goal run that was capped by markers by Pepe and Vaccaro for a 4-2 lead with three to play in the first half.
Central's McCartney scored her first with 2:15 left in the first half and the Blue Devils never looked back, running off seven-straight while keeping the Pioneers off the scoreboard until 11 minutes left in the game.
CCSU tacked on three in the first 7:16 for the second half to take a 6-4 lead. McCartney scored twice more at 18:01 and 14:47 and Central took their biggest lead at 9-6. SHU tried to mount a rally as Vaccaro ended the run at the 11 minute mark with an 8-meter score. Central's defense would allow just one more SHU score, a Pepe goal with six minutes left to keep the Pioneers at bay.
SHU goalkeeper Kelly Keenan (Wantagh, NY) made 11 saves in cage for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart is back on the road at Bryant on Saturday afternoon.
