Bridgeport, CT – A late game-winner by sophomore Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) clinched the 3-2 win over the St. Michael's Purple Knights, and earned the Pioneers third place at the ECAC Women's Hockey Open. SHU finishes their season with an 18-13-2 record, 11-5 at home.
The first period saw an extremely fast paced and back and forth style of play between the Pioneers and Purple Knights. Both teams finished the first period with 10 shots on goal.The Purple knights grabbed the 1-0 lead at 16:29 of the first period. Senoir Lisa D'Angelo found the back of the net on an assist from junior Mary Liz Pinnella.
The Pioneers would fire back with two goals of their own in the second period. The first coming at 3:10 of the second period when sophomore Cara Curran (Westfield, MA) was able to redirect junior Jennie Robinson's shot to tie the game up at one. SHU eventually took the 2-1 lead in the second period, on a goal from sophomore Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA). Souza was able to glide through the St. Mike's defense and put one past goaltender Erin Stevens. Souza was assisted by Davis and Catie Ladner (Chaska, MN).
St. Mike's battled back in the third period, ultimately tying the game up at 11:35 of the third period. Junior Macey Thomas scored an unassisted goal to level the game at two. The game seemed headed for overtime until sophomore Alex Davis was able to find the back of the net for the game-winner, as the Pioneers finished off St. Michael's to win the ECAC Open Consolation contest. Davis was assisted by Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) and Souza.
Sacred Heart goaltender Nicole Magee made 30 saves in the victory for the Pioneers, including a few extremely impressive blocks in the second period to keep the Pioneers' lead at 2-1.
Sacred Heart ends the season with 7 more wins than last season. Sophomore Casey Stathopoulos ends the season as the Pioneers' leading scorer with 14 goals and 29 assists.
