Bridgeport, CT – The Pioneers were able to overcome being outshot 43-22 to down Trinity, 2-0 Tuesday night, due to an outstanding night for Sacred Heart goaltender Mandy Montgomery (Grand Ledge, MI). Montgomery notched an incredible 42 saves, and even fended off a penalty shot to earn the shutout win for the Pioneers (14-11-2).
Sacred Heart goalie Mandy Montgomery saved all 16 of Trinity's shots in the first period, shutting them out through the first twenty. Pioneers were able to strike first on the Bantams, taking the 1-0 lead at 11:54 of the first period. Sophomore Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) put the Pioneers on the board, sliding the puck past Trinity goalie Alexa Puyol off a beautiful feed from sophomore Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA). Senior Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA) got the play started for SHU, earning the second assist on the play.
Montgomery was equally impressive in the second period, notching 15 more saves to keep the Pioneers up 1-0 going into the final frame.
Just 47 seconds into the third period the Pioneers were able to get an insurance goal to finish off the Bantams, 2-0. A great passing sequence by Leahy and sophomore Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) led to Leahy finding the back of the net to put the finishing touches on Trinity.
