BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's hockey team got two goals from Whitney Henderson en route to a 3-1 win over the Franklin Pierce Ravens Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport. Casey Stathopoulos assisted on all three Pioneers goals.
Sacred Heart (12-11-2) controlled play in the first period. The Pioneers outshot Franklin Pierce (5-11) 13-8 in the opening stanza while fighting off an early Ravens power play. Henderson put the Pioneers on the board at the 15:04 mark of the first as she tapped a Stathopoulos pass just over the goal line to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead on a power play goal. Sacred Heart extended the lead to 2-0 just under four minutes into the second period. Once again, it was Stathopoulos and Henderson combining for the Pioneers' tally as the two scored on a breakout of the Sacred Heart zone.
Franklin Pierce had ample opportunities to get back in the game in the second period as the Pioneers took three penalties in the frame. However, Sacred Heart goalie Alexius Schutt stopped nine shots to help the Pioneers fight off each penalty. The Ravens did close the gap to one 5:03 into the third period as Karsyn Baker put a Samantha Bureau pass off a goalpost and past Schutt to make the score 2-1. Sacred Heart got its lead back up to two at the 7:20 mark of the final period. Stathopoulos earned her third point of the night assisting on a Jennifer Hasson goal that made the score 3-1. The Pioneers made that score stand until the final buzzer.
The Ravens outshot Sacred Heart 31-27, but were held scoreless on the power play in five chances. Schutt made 30 saves for the Pioneers, 15 of which came in the second period.
The two sides meet again on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to wrap up their weekend series.
