Rutland, VT - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team got two goals from sophomore Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) and freshman Anne Gomolinski (Western Springs, IL), en route to an impressive 7-1 win over Franklin Pierce in the consolation game of the Rutland Herald Invitational. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 11-9-2 on the season and secured third place in the Rutland Invitational after falling to Holy Cross Friday night.
The Pioneers were all over Franklin Pierce from the start, quickly taking a 2-0 lead and scoring four first period goals. Sophomore Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) got things started for the Pioneers, scoring a power play goal at 4:55 to take the 1-0 lead. Davis was assisted by sophomore Natasha Klinoff (Concord, MA) and senior Sarah Delaney (Whittman, MA). Gomolinsky extended Sacred Heart's lead to 2-0, with an unassisted goal just three minutes later. The Ravens would score their only goal of the game to cut the Pioneers' lead in half at 9:57 with an unassisted goal by Colleen Doucette. Gomolinsky added the next goal for the Pioneers, assisted by senior Jennifer Hasson (Quakertown, PA) and sophomore Catherine Chittick (Hingham, MA). Stathopoulos added the last first period goal for the Pioneers to take the 4-1 lead after the first frame. She was assisted by junior Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) and Chittick.
After a scoreless second period, the Pioneers got back at it with a goal by Stathopoulos at 7:34 of the third period. Chittick notched her third assist of the game on the Stathopoulos goal to give the Pioneers the 5-2 lead. The Pioneers netted two more goals to finish the game, one by sophomore Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA) and the other to sophomore Cara Curran (Westford, MA).
The Pioneers hit the ice next when they travel to take on RIT this Friday.
