South Burlington, VT - The Sacred Heart women's hockey team defeated the Nichols College Bison Saturday afternoon, 4-1, on day two of the St. Michael's Doubletree Ice Hockey Classic. Sophomore Melissa Robbins' three points and junior goaltender Alexius Schutt's (Elk River, MN) 34 saves propelled the Pioneers to their second win in as many days. The Pioneers had previously defeated host St. Michael's Friday night by a score of 3-0. The two wins allowed the Pioneers to notch 7 total points, earning them second place at the classic. SUNY Potsdam took home gold.
For the second straight game the Pioneers scored the first three goals of the game. Sacred Heart's first goal of the game at 18:56 of the opening period. Sophomore Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) found the back of the net for an unassisted goal. It was their fourth first period goal of the tournament.
Robbins also helped out on the Pioneers second goal of the game assisting Pioneers' leading scorer sophomore Casey Stathopoulos (Waltham, MA) to extend SHU's lead to 2-0 at 13:26 of the second period. It was Stathopoulos' 11th goal of the season. Robbins tallied her third point of the game at 18:50 of the second period, a goal assisted by Cara Curran (Westford, MA).
Nichols opened the scoring of the third period with a goal at 9:14 of the third period. Talia Hohmann found the back of the net, off an assist from Erin Dice. The Pioneers would score the final goal with under a minute left in the game to make the final score 4-1. Junior Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) scored the fourth goal of the game, assisted by Stathopoulos and junior Jennie Robinson (Hyde Park, NY).
Schutt and Stathopoulos were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Pioneers are back in action this coming week for a two game series at Southern Maine starting Tuesday.
