Women's Hockey Beaten 8-2 at Penn State
(State College, PA) – The Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team fell 8-2 to the Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday afternoon.
Penn State got goals from eight different players. Shannon Yoxheimer opened the scoring at 14:06 of the first, assisted by Jess Desorice. Many Montgomery stopped 23 shots in the first period to keep it a one-goal game.
The Pioneers stormed back right out of the intermission, tying the game 13 seconds into the second on a goal by Melissa Robbins, with the assists going to Casey Stathopoulos and Maura Leahy. However, the Nittany Lions roared back with four goals in the period, including three straight to retake the lead. Taylor Gross put Penn State back on top at 6:18, with Yoxheimer and Desorice setting her up. Kendra Rasmussen extended the lead at 8:29, with helpers going to Tess Weaver and Jenna Welch. Jill Holdcroft added an unassisted goal 1:11 later.
Whitney Henderson got one back from SHU on the power play at 13:54, set up by Catie Ladner and Meaghan Souza. However, PSU responded at 15:26 on a goal by Desorice with assists credited to Gross and Madison Smiddy.
Penn State skated away with the game behind a three-goal barrage by Welch at 4:20, Smiddy on the power play at 18:07, and Emily Laurenzi with eight seconds to play.
Montgomery finished with a staggering 56 saves, as PSU outshot SHU 64-56.
