Women's Hockey Throttles URI 7-3
Bridgeport, CT – The Sacred Heart Pioneers took it to the University of Rhode Island Friday night to earn their first win of the season 7-3.
The first period saw some great action by the Pioneers, putting 14 shots on goal and taking a 1-0 lead. Sophomore forward Casey Stathopoulis (Waltham, MA) put Sacred Heart on the board knocking one pass the goalie on a nice centering pass from junior forward Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN). Sophomore forward Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) had a couple great opportunities up close but was denied both times by URI goalie Kayla DiLorenzo. The penalty killers for the Pioneers were also particularly impressive denying URI on three power play opportunities.
The Pioneers and Rams played an extremely high paced second period with opportunities coming on both sides. Sophomore forward Cara Curran (Westfield, MA) got the scoring started for Sacred Heart tipping in a goal; assists on the goal went to sophomore defender Catherine Chittick (Hingham, MA) and freshman forward Anne Gromolinski (Western Springs, IL). Sophomore Alanna Woodford (Scituate, MA) forward scored next for the Pioneers to give them a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore forward Alex Davis (Pembroke, MA) and sophomore forward Briana Connolly (Duxbury, MA) were credited with the assists. Rhode Island got their first goal at 5:11 in the second to cut the deficit to3-1. Junior Alisha DiFilippo put in an unassisted goal to get the Rams on the board. The Pioneers closed the scoring in the period with a goal at 8:39, put in by Woodford and assisted by Connolly and freshman defender Megan Ofner (Hamilton, NJ).
URI got a power play goal in the third period by sophomore Cassondra Catlow off a deflection to cut the score to 4-2. The goal was assisted by sophomore Sydney Collins. The Pioneers scored two short-handed goals in the third to put away the Rams for good. Curran and Hanna both put in unassisted short-handed goals back to back as they were killing a five minute major given to Sarah Delaney for hitting from behind. Both URI and SHU scored once more a piece to make the final score 7-3 Sacred Heart.
The Pioneers are back at it against URI tomorrow at 2 PM.
