Women's Hockey Downed by Third-Period Surge 5-3 to SUNY-Potsdam
Bridgeport, CT - The SUNY-Potsdam Bears rallied in the third period, defeating the Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team 5-3 Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice.
Breanna Roy gave the Bears a 1-0 lead with a ringing slap shot that found the back of the net from just inside the blue line at 11:57 of the first. The Bears outshot Sacred Heart 16-9 in the first period. The Pioneers however had a nice opportunity to score the first goal but could not capitalize. Briana Connolly (Duxbury, MA) was all alone in front of the net but was denied with a nice save from goaltender Jen Conophy.
The second period saw the Pioneers firing on all cylinders, scoring three goals to take a 3-1 lead. Maura Leahy wasted little time getting Sacred Heart on the scoreboard with a goal just over a minute into the period, assisted by Meaghan Souza. Nicole Palazzo scored the next two goals for the Pioneers to take the lead 3-1. The first goal at 13:36 was assisted by Leahy on the power play, and the second assisted by Catie Ladner at 18:47. A five-minute major penalty for checking to Potsdam State's Izzy Fayerman gave SHU.
The Bears surged back in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals to finish off the Pioneers 5-3. Caitlin Manahan scored from Katie Komas at 4:04, followed by the game-tying goal by Jenn Crawford, set up by Fayerman and Brittany Lucky at 10:53. Roy netted the game-winner from Emilee Hazelden at 14:39 with her second of the night, followed by Crawford with an unassisted goal for her second of the night as well.
The Bears and Pioneers face off once again tomorrow at 2:00 pm at the Wonderland in the regular season finale. There will be pregame ceremonies to honor the eight graduating seniors, as well as a post-game Skate with the Pioneers.
