Women's Ice Hockey Falls to Oswego State 2-0
(Bridgeport, CT) – The Women's Hockey team lost 2-0 to Oswego State Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice, settling for a weekend split of the two-game series with the Lakers.
Both teams had many chances in the first period, but neither the Pioneers nor the Lakers could put a goal on the board. Oswego had two more shots than SHU, 16-14.
Olivia Boersen found the back of the net on the power play for the Lakers to take a 1-0 lead at 12:18 of the second period. SHU could not take advantage of its one power play in the 2nd period. Oswego controlled most of the action in the second period and outshot the Pioneers 17-9.
The Lakers took a 2-0 lead with an early third period goal by Melissa Seamont at 6:13, with Megan Howe picking up the assist. Both teams combined for a total of five penalties in the period for a total of 12 for the game. The Pioneers were unable to take advantage of a 5-on-3 power play they received during the middle of the final period. The Lakers' Goaltender Bridget Smith picked up the shutout, notching 31 saves. Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) nearly matched her, making 41 saves in net for SHU.
The Pioneers host the Bears of Potsdam State next Friday, February 17 at 7:00 pm.
