Women's Hockey Defeats Penn State 4-3

(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Women's Hockey team beat the Penn State Lady Icers Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice, holding on for a 4-3 victory.

Maura Leahy began the scoring at 5:27 of the second, with Natasha Klinoff and Caitlin Gottwald setting her up.  Jess Desorice tied the game for Penn State at 10:06 of second, set up by Taylor Gross. 

It remained tied until a wild end of the second period.  Carly Szysko gave Penn State a short-lived lead at 18:21, assisted by Katie Murphy.  However, the Pioneers stormed back to tie on another goal by Leahy, unassisted with 36 seconds remaining, then reclaimed the lead 12 seconds later on a goal by Catie Ladner, set up by Meaghan Souza and Jamie Mey.

Melissa Robbins scored what proved to be the game winner 57 seconds into the third, with Sarah Delaney picking up the assist.  Penn State cut the SHU lead to one on a goal by Jess Desorice, with Taylor Gross and Tess Weaver assisting.

The Pioneers continued to pressure the Lady Icers, outshooting Penn State 17-8 in the third and 43-22 for the game. Alexius Schutt once again earned the win with 19 saves.

SHU hosts Penn State again at the Wonderland at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
