Colchester, VT- The Sacred Heart Women's Ice Hockey team won the St. Michael's Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon, winning for the second straight night over the host Purple Knights. The win marked the Pioneers' fourth straight and fifth in their last six games.
Two second period goals proved to be enough for the Pioneers, who skated scoreless with St. Michael's for the majority of the first period, until Kristin Spulecki scored off of an assist from Olivia Collins. That would prove to be the end of the scoring night for the Purple Knights, as Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) stopped 36 of 37 shots.
The power play played a crucial role for the Pioneers, as they connected on two goals with the advantage in the second period. Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) scored on an assist from Jennifer Burroughs (Raleigh, NC) at the 8:16 mark, and Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN) scored on an assist from Jamie Mey (Middletown, RI) with five seconds remaining in the period.
Mey would assist a third Pioneer goal, setting up Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA) to clinch the 3-1 victory for the Pioneers. Her four assists to two games earned her St. Michael's Holiday Tournament MVP honors, while Schutt also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Pioneers are back on the ice on January 2nd as they try to extend their winning streak to five games, when they take on Bowdoin in the Codfish Bowl at 4:00 pm.
