(South Burlington, VA) – The Sacred Heart University Women's Hockey team returned from holiday break to a win 5-2 against Nichols at the Saint Michael's Holliday Classic Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers scored the first five goals of the game in their first game in 20 days. Melissa Robbins (Nashua, NH) scored two goals, beginning with the first of the game on the power play from Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, CT) at 6:09 of the first period.
SHU erupted for four goals in the second, beginning with Maura Leahy (Ashburnham, MA) at 9:44 with assists going to Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) and Natasha Klinoff(Concord, MA). Tara Kent (Glenview, IL) made it 3-0 with Palazzo picking up another helper at 12:41. Robbins scored her second on Palazzo's third assist of the game at 17:54, and Meaghan Souza (Wilmington, MA) closed out the period with SHU's final goal with 14 seconds left on an assist by Leahy.
Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) stopped 37 shots, allowing goals to Megan Gerein and Amber Aaskov after the Pioneers already built a comfortable third period lead.
Sacred Heart goes for its fourth win in a row the following day, Saturday Dec. 31 at 4:00 pm for a New Year's Eve matinee against the tournament host Saint Michael's Purple Eagles.
