(Schenectady, NY) – The Union Dutchwomen defeated the Sacred Heart University Women's Hockey team 9-2 Saturday afternoon.
Despite being outshot 20-1 in the first period, SHU fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to the tie the game almost halfway through. Lauren Hoffman and Taylor Purvis scored for Union within a minute of each other at 10:25 and 11:21 of the first, but Meagan Souza (Wilmington, MA) began SHU's comeback attempt at 17:37 of the first, with an assist going to Sara Hanna (Lino Lakes, MN). The Pioneers then tied the game at 9:28 of the second on a goal by Brianna Connolly (Duxbury, MA), assisted by Alanna Woodford (Scituate, MA).
Stephanie Thomson put Union back on top for good at 15:36 of the second, assisted by Purvis, then seized the momentum for the Dutchwomen with a goal assisted by Nicole Bartlett with 26 seconds remaining before the intermission.
Rhianna Kurio quickly added to the lead 49 seconds into the third, with a helper by Hoffman, then scored again on the power play at 7:26, set up by Lauren Cromartie and Bryanne Panchuk. Panchuk added a goal of her own at 11:18, set up by Jeannie Sabourin. Molly Kate Devin closed out the scoring at 15:57, with Sabourin picking up another assist.
Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) made 56 saves for the Pioneers, and Alexis Molotky (Zeeland, MI) added ten saves on as many shots in relief. Sacred Heart will next play at Rhode Island on Saturday, October 15 at 1:00 pm.
