Pioneers Shut Out by Black Bears 6-0 in Women's Hockey Season Opener
(Orono, ME) – The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team was shutout by the University of Maine Friday night 6-0 in the 2011-12 season opener.
Maine generated 63 shots on goal, but Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) stood up to make 57 saves for the Pioneers. Black Bear goalies Brittany Ott and Candice Currier combined for 14 saves for the shutout. Danielle Ward solved Schutt at the 11:34 mark with the game's first goal, assisted by Myriam Crousette and Jennifer Moore.
The Black Bears broke away in the second with four goals, starting with Melissa Gagnon's power play 1:14 into the second, assisted by More and Dawn Sullivan. Missy Denk added another 54 seconds later, with the feed coming from Brittany Dougherty. Denk made it 4-0 at 14:22 with a second goal, this time on the power play helped out by Crousette and Ward. Crousette finished the period with a short-handed goal, making it 5-0 1:44 away from the intermission. Katty Massey capped off the scoring 3:09 into the third with Brianne Kilgour and Gagno assisting.
