MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Freshman goaltender Alexius Schutt (Elk River, Minn.) stopped 33 shots en route to her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win for the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team at Wesleyan, Wednesday evening.
The win improved the Pioneers record to 8-17-0 this season, while the Cardinals fell to 2-15-1.
At the 5:43 mark of the first period, sophomore forward Megan Murphy (Holden, Mass.) scored a power play goal that would prove to be the game winner. Murphy received the puck in the slot, off a feed from junior Nicole Palazzo (Rocky Hill, Conn.), and backhanded the puck into the net for her eighth score of the season.
After a scoreless second period, senior forward Kristina Hankins (Lexington, Mass.) added her sixth goal of the season to extend the SHU lead to 2-0, 2:15 into the final stanza. Sophomore defender Sarah Delaney (Whittman, Mass.) set up the goal by firing a shot from the point that was deflected into the net by Hankins.
