(Oswego, NY) - The Sacred Heart Pioneer women's hockey team traveled to Oswego State this weekend, and lost 7-0 Friday afternoon at 5-2 Saturday afternoon. Pioneer goalie Alexius Schutt (Elk River, MN) did all she could, making 52 saves Friday, and an impressive total of 86 saves on the weekend.
However, despite trailing just 1-0 after one period on a goal by Mady Paul in Friday's game, the Pioneers allowed five Laker goals in the second period. Chelsea Hunt, Carly Henderson, Jocelyn St. Clair, Sarah Hannon, and Mackenzie Lee all added goals for Oswego State. Lee scored her second goal of the game to make it 7-0.
Trailing 2-0 after one period on goals by Henderson and Kelly Collins in Saturday's game, Sacred Heart came back to tie it in the second period. Tara Kent (Glenview, IL) scored her fourth of the season, with assists to Jackie Galvin (Canton, MA) and Caitlin Gottwald (Reading, MA) just 2:10 into the period. SHU tied it on the power play when Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, ON) took a feed from Kent and snuck a shot from the point through a screen.
However, Oswego State came back with three goals, including what proved to be the game-winner on the power play with just 47 seconds left in the second period. Megan Howe deflected a shot from Brenna Weber to give the Lakers a lead they would only increase. Howe and Collins both added their second goals of the game in the third, as Oswego State completed the weekend sweep.
The Pioneers are on break until January 4th and 5th, when they travel to Southern Maine for 3:00 starts in both ends of a two-game weekend series.
