FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team returns to action for its final road game before the team's home opener on October 23. The Pioneers (0-3-0) are seeking their first win of the season against Union (0-2-0) at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y.
Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart visits Union for its fourth straight game to open the 2010-11 season. The puck drops for Friday night's game at 7:00 pm.
About Sacred Heart... The Pioneers have struggled to put the puck in the net through their first three games. However, freshman Alexius Schutt has emerged as the team's number one goaltender. In her collegiate debut, Schutt posted 45 saves at Maine. She has already totaled 125 saves in three starts and holds a .874 save percentage. Senior forward Lauren Fontaine is coming off 36 points effort from the 2009-10 season. She led SHU in scoring with 22 goals and added 14 assists and figures to lead the Pioneer attack once again this season.
Last Time Out... Early goals in each period spelled trouble as Sacred Heart fell to intrastate rival Quinnipiac 5-0, Sunday afternoon. Schutt made a career high 48 saves in an effort to keep her team in the game. The Bobcats got goals in the first three minutes of each period en route to the victory.
Last Time They Met... Sacred Heart was swept in a weekend series at Union last season. The Dutchwomen were victorious 6-0 and 3-1. In game two, Tara Kent notched the lone goal of the weekend for the Pioneers.
