SOMERSET, N.J. - The Sacred Heart University women's golf team was slected to finish second in the Northeast Conference preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. Three-time defending champion Fairleigh Dickinson was the unanimous pick to repeat, while the Pioneers received the one other first place vote.
Sacred Heart head coach Matthew McGreevey has his sights set on a first-ever NEC championship for the Pioneers, who began showing their potential over the fall. The team beat out rival Fairleigh Dickinson for the ECAC title thanks to junior Carly Bergin (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), who tied for third place. Bergin took home an NEC Golfer of the Week honor for her efforts, and again later in the season for placing fourth at the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. Flanking Bergin is sophomore teammate Gabriella Riber (Stockholm, Sweden/Danderyds Gymnasium). As a rookie, Riber took fourth at the NEC Championship and was named to the All-Conference first team. In the fall she was picked as NEC Golfer of the Week after winning the Rutgers Invitational.
The 2011 NEC Women's Golf Tournament will be held at the LPGA International Club in Daytona Beach, FL from April 21-23. Team scores will be compiled by adding the team's four lowest scores from each day. The top-10 finishers will be designated All-Tournament performers.
