(Hanover, NH) – The Sacred Heart University Field Hockey team lost 2-1 to Longwood Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Big Green Classic at Dartmouth College.
The Lancers and Pioneers traded corner goals within a minute of each other to begin the scoring. After Rachel Akers tipped in a goal-line deflection off a corner at 3:13 for Longwood, Sarah Bergman (Blandon, PA) did the same on a corner shot from Kate Boyd (Nottingham, NH) at 4:09.
The score remained tied until 45:42, when Olga Knop scored the game-winning goal off a corner set up by Rachel Akers and Stacey de Grandhomme. After generating ten-first half shots, the Pioneers were only able to get off one shot in the second half. Longwood took 12 shots in the second en route to outshooting SHU 19-11 in the game.
Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) made a total of six saves, including five in the second half to give the Pioneers a chance. However, Lancer goalkeeper Kaye Goulding stopped four SHU shots for the win.
The Pioneers are next in action when they host Drexel on Friday, September 9 in a game that will be played at Yale at 7:00 p.m.
