Julia Greene Signs NLI With Sacred Heart Fencing

FAIRFIELD, CT (December 10, 2012) - Sacred Heart University Head Fencing Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel has announced the signing of Julia Greene to a National Letter of Intent to fence saber for the Pioneers next season.  Greene is from Tewksbury, NJ, where she is the saber squad captain on the Vorhees High School fencing team, which is coached by Amy Lawless.

"We are very excited to have Julia joining the team next season", comments Dr. Vrabel.  "She is a fierce competitor and does very well under pressure."

Last season Julia was a NJIFA First Team All-State selection.  She was named the Vorhees HS "Most Outstanding Fencer"as a junior, where she had a 46-5 record.   Among Greene's other scholastic fencing accomplishments include being named the women's saber MVP of the 2012 NJSIAA Santelli Tournament and being the gold medalist last season in individual saber in the NJSIAA Second District.

In addition to her accomplishments in scholastic fencing, Greene carries a USFA B rating in saber.  Some of her USFA national accomplishments include placing second in last March's Division II North American Cup tournament in Columbus, Ohio, placing 20th in the 2012 USFA U17 Junior Olympics Championship, and placing 22nd in the 2012 USFA U20 Junior Olympics Championship.  Greene represents the The Saber School Fencing Club where she is coached by former Polish Olympian Tomasz Stusinski.

"Julia reminds me very much of one of Sacred Heart's past saber stars Krista Bacci," stated Vrabel.  "Krista was a four time all Northeast Fencing Conference Selection and made it to the NCAA Championship Round during her Pioneer career.  I see similar success in Greene's future."
