FAIRFIELD, CT (March 5, 2012) - Sacred Heart University's 18th ranked Women's Fencing team qualified the maximum number of fencers for the NCAA Regionals to be held on Sunday, March 11 at Boston College. For the first time in program history, the Pioneers have qualified ten women for NCAA Regionals.
Qualifiers in foil include team captain Jayme Smith (Ridgefield, CT), Aileen Trella (Berkley Heights, NJ), Melissa Tsiames (New Fairfield, CT) and Tess Kallmeyer (Pacific Palisades, CA), Natalie Rossetti (Guilford, CT), Megan Floyd (Media, PA), Colleen Mason (Waterford, CT) and Nikki Price (Seekonk, MA) in epee, and Elena Tringa (Garden City, NY) and Lauren Cebello (Clinton, NJ) in saber.
"I am very pleased that we qualified ten fencers for the NCAA Regional Competition", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Several of our women have pretty high seeds for Regionals and have a good chance of qualifying for the Championship Round at Ohio State with top six results next Sunday. I would not be surprised if at least two of our athletes advance to Columbus. We are fencing very well right now and I like our chances".
