(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart Men's Fencing team is the #9 ranked team in the nation on the first College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll of the season, announced January 18. This marks the first time the program has cracked the top ten, making it as far as #11 last year.
The Pioneers have been off since December 3, when they pulled off their greatest ever victory, a 14-13 win over national powerhouse Penn State. All-Americans Justin Dion and Marty Williams and team captain Stuart Holmes led the Pioneers on the day. Dion helped lead the epee squad to a 25-18 performance. Williams went 11-4 to pace the saber squad. Holmes won 5-1 in foil to clinch the victory.
The Women's Fencing team is ranked #16 in the College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll, marking the first time both the men and the women received votes in the same poll.
Sacred Heart returns to action Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational at the University of Pennsylvania, who currently is ranked #6 in the nation. The Pioneers are looking to build upon an 11-2 record that includes wins over Haverford, MIT, Brown, Brandeis, Vassar, North Carolina, and NYU among others.
