(Wellesley, MA) - The Pioneers traveled to Wellesley College Sunday and went 4-3 on the day, defeating Boston University 17-10, Dartmouth 23-4, UMASS 16-11, and Smith 15-12. They lost to Tufts 14-13, Wellesley 16-11, and Vassar 21-6. The Pioneers were led on the day by Colleen Mason (Waterford, CT), who went 20-1 in epee. Also starring for the Pioneers were Natalie Rossetti (Guilford, CT) at 17-4 and Jayme Smith (Ridgefield, CT) at 15-6 in foil and Lauren Cebello (Clinton, NJ) at 15-6 in saber. Mason, Smith, and Rossetti each completed Conference competition with 27-9 records, while Cebello was 21-15.
"I am very pleased with how the team did this year," said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "We knew that this would be a rebuilding year and that the important thing was to keep our focus and build off of our successes. I am very happy for Colleen Mason today. She is beginning to really dominate in collegiate epee. I look for her to have a great result at the NCAA Regionals. Next season Smith, Cebello and Mason will be Juniors and Rossetti will only be a Sophomore. With Elena Tringa returning next season and with several strong recruits on the horizon, we should be back in the Conference's top echelon of teams very soon."
The Pioneers conclude their dual match season on Wednesday evening at NYU with matches against the Violets and the Columbia Lions. Competition for SHU will begin at 5 PM.
