The Pioneers traveled to MIT on Saturday for the first leg of the NFC matches for the season. The team defeated the University of New Hampshire 18-9 but lost to Brown 21-6, Brandeis 20-7, MIT 17-10, and Boston College 20-7.
The foil squad led the way for the day and had an overall winning record (24-21). Foil was led by the tandem of sophomore team captain Jayme Smith (12-3) and freshman Natalie Rossetti (10-5). "I am very pleased with how the foil team is fencing this season", comments head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Natalie has been a great addition to the team. Jayme always works hard and her confidence has increased this season. As a result, she is becoming a formidable opponent in Northeastern collegiate foil. Both fencers have a good chance of making the all league teams this year".
The epee squad was led on the day by squad captain Colleen Mason with seven victories, while sophomore Lauren Cebello led saber with six wins. "This was by far the toughest part of the league schedule", said Vrabel. "Four of the teams we fenced on Saturday were among the top five programs in the league this year. We have a good chance of winning five or six of our last seven league matches. That would put us at better than .500 for the season, which I feel will be a great accomplishment , considering everyone that we lost to graduation last spring."
The Pioneers are back in action at the Pitt Center on Dec 5, where they will face defending NCAA Champions Penn State, Princeton, Harvard, UNC Chapel Hill, Vassar and NYU. Action starts on Dec 5th at 10 AM and admission is free.
