Wallingford, CT – The #10 Sacred Heart women's bowling team finished the first Northeast Conference meet with an 8-1 record and holds a two game lead over the rest of the field. Jackie Carbonetto (Blauvelt, NY) paced the Pioneers with a meet best 226 average. SHU sophomore Nicole Trudell (Coventry, RI) had the second highest average among all competitors with a 207.
Sacred Heart (19-3, 8-1 NEC) started the weekend off with three straight routs, running away from Long Island, #15 St. Francis (NY) and Saint Peter's. The Pioneers then ran into a top-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson squad that was coming off of back-to-back losses. SHU would bowl its best game of the day but wind up on the wrong end of an 1167-1040 decision. Sacred Heart closed the afternoon with a tight 981-966 victory over Saint Francis (PA). Savannah Zientara (Lewiston, NY) posted a 214 while Chevi Panzanella (Brewster, NY) notched a 210 to secure the Pioneers 4-1 day one record.
The Pioneers started day two on fire, shooting over 1,000 in each of the first three games to knock off Monmouth as well as ranked opponents #12 Adelphi and #6 New Jersey City. Carbonetto recorded huge scores in the first three matches of 244, 246, and 234. Jacquleine Willy (Clarence, NY) and Carbonetto hung matching 216's in SHU's final match of the day, a convincing 953-852 drubbing of #7 Kutztown.
The Sacred Heart women's bowling team looks to build on their fast start to the 2011-12 season as they compete in the Hawk Classic, hosted by UMES, next weekend.
