The Pioneers posted an 8-1 record over the weekend and now sit in a four-way tie atop the Northeast Conference standings. Sarah Pelletier (Lewiston, ME) paced the Pioneers throughout the second NEC meet of the 2010-11 season with a frame average well above twenty. SHU went 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents as the Pioneers notched the top pinfall total for each day of the event.
Sacred Heart (51-22, 14-4 NEC) opened action on Saturday with a convincing 1173-969 victory over Long Island. All nine matches were contested in six baker games with the winner being determined by total pinfall. The Pioneers then stormed past #11 St. Francis (NY) in the second match of the afternoon, 1177-1029. SHU made its only misstep of the meet against #2 Fairleigh Dickinson as the Knights claimed a 1256-1152 win. The Pioneers ralled to shoot over 1200, averaging over 200 per game, in each of the next two contests to defeat both Monmouth and #7 Kutztown.
Sacred Heart cruised in the first match of day two to down Saint Francis (PA), 1120-1030. The Pioneers then picked up a big win over #9 NCJU by the count of 1190-1125. The Gothic Knights had been undefeated for the weekend and at the time were in sole possession of first-place. SHU finished the weekend on a six match win streak with triumphs over Saint Peter's and #10 Adelphi 1265-1168 and 1186-1013, respectively.
The Pioneers are tied for the top spot in the NEC standings with Fairleigh Dickinson, Kutztown and NJCU. SHU is currently ranked #8 in the nation but have posted a 16-8 record since the latest national poll. The NTCA plans to release new rankings in the upcoming week.
Sacred Heart, the defending NEC tournament champions, return to action in two weeks at the Morgan State Invitational.
